The sheer variety of recreational vehicles on the market can make your choice difficult to narrow down. One of the more popular styles is the self-contained motorhome, also called a motorcoach. These versatile vehicles come in several styles and sizes to suit many different travelers’ needs.
Definition
A motorhome is, as noted, a self-contained recreational vehicle. By this, we simply mean that it doesn’t require a towing vehicle like other styles do: it possesses its own engine and drivetrain. This is a boon to campers because it’s very simple to get into the cab and drive without worrying about towing and hitching.
Motorcoaches come in three main styles, called “classes.” Each one has its own unique attributes and suitability for different types of camping.
Class A motorhomes are the largest and generally the most well-appointed style, with a bus-like chassis. They can be over 30’ in length and have very spacious interiors. These big motorcoaches are perfect for families and groups of friends.
Class B motorhomes are the smallest size, resembling large vans. These will best suit solo travelers or a couple, since they have limited interior space and fewer, more basic amenities. They are, however, very easy to drive, compact and the most affordable class.
Finally, Class C motorhomes are the in-between style in terms of size and what they offer. You’ll find very small ones that just give you the essentials, but then there are much larger ones that approach Class As in terms of their amenities. This style resembles a truck, with an alcove that hangs over the cab.
Features
If you’re looking to upgrade your experience with more luxuries and creature comforts, then a motorhome is the way to go. They are well-constructed and high-quality rigs. Some of the larger models feature sleeping space for over ten campers! This may come in the form of one or more private bedrooms, convertible furnishings or bunks tucked out of the way, or a combination of all three.
Slide-outs are another common feature of motorhomes, giving you that little bit of extra space when you’re camping that easily tucks away to make driving less of a hassle. You can look into even more luxurious features like bigger kitchens with residential-style appliances or models with a secondary bathroom.
